Diane McLoughlin

Diane McLoughlin is well known on the London jazz scene as a saxophone player and composer. She studied jazz performance and composition at The Guildhall School of Music. Following this she has written for and directed her own 17-piece jazz orchestra ‘Giant Steppes’.

Giant Steppes has performed to critical acclaim at concerts and festivals throughout Britain, including several appearances in the London Jazz Festival, and regularly features leading British players such as Henry Lowther, Annie Whitehead, Steve Lodder and vocalist Ian Shaw. BBC Radio Three broadcasted a complete concert of the band as part of the ‘Impressions’ series.

In addition to Giant Steppes, Diane led the quirky ‘Di’s New Outfit’,
which blended improvised music with European cabaret styles, developing a cult following on the London scene. She also composed for and led her own contemporary jazz quartet. More recently she has developed ‘Zdravets’, a project with piano and accordion player Kim Burton, producing jazz music infused with Brazilian and Balkan folk influences and the ‘Boogie Wonderland Big band’, playing arrangements and compositions inspired by music from the 70s.

At the present time Diane is focusing on writing for film and
television and has recently achieved a Masters degree from the London
College of Music and Media. She has received commissions from GLAA, the London Arts Board and the Arts Council of Great Britain. She has been interviewed both on BBC’s Radio Three and Four and has appeared on network television.
